JD POWER 3-YR STUDY (cars owned for three years by the same person)
It is the most worthwhile in my opinion - a study at the 3 year mark! Almost every car company does great in their 90 day study, so the ranking is just splitting hairs. Whereas this one in my mind really matters. Brand loyalty cannot be the end all as many times the same brand can have both great and bad models in their lineup. It sure gives a clue as to what bands really hold up. For comparison I have listed the 2019 study followed by the current 2023 for cars owned since 2020. Some major shifts in some brands!!
I am surprised to see Jeep rank that low I've had three. Kept first one until about 92K miles, only one repair. Dif issues and Jeep paid for parts. The last Jeep we kept until it had about 75K on it, nothing but routine maintenance.
Not surprised to see VW lands where it does. Grandson's car also needed tie rods, etc.... We have mentioned the lack of reliability to them about VW's more than once..... Would have hoped lessons would have been learned with the first one.....

My one Jeep vehicle was rock solid, not a single defect with it, I also had two Dodges with zero defects too. My mother's Dodge minivan had a motor that could not be destroyed even without any maintenance being done on it for 100's of thousands of kms.

The Kia leaves me Some insurance companies won't insure them due to the ease of stealing them. I had not heard good things about long term ownership with Kia or Hyundai. Maybe they've improved?

I agree about Kia. They make some very good looking vehicles but I'm not close to trusting their longevity yet. My 2017 Pilot has definitely made me consider changing to a new make.

I know many here don't have faith in Korean companies but I hear the exact opposite from Detroit based auto journalists. They are very impressed with them and they have been covering them for years. They keep trying to point out their non-stop improvements in every aspect and how quickly they keep up with new technology, plus many of their designs are excellent, as are their values. They warn Japanese as well as American companies, plus German that their foothold is constantly growing.
A year or so ago, we stopped at a Toyota dealership to say hello to a former co-worker of Rick's. He was service/parts manager for the Toyota dealership and a Hyundai dealership next door.
He pointed out a row of Hyundais all waiting for transmissions. The wait was long, and many of the cars didn't have all that much mileage on them.

A lady I work with is on her third Hyundai engine. She has been left stranded on the side of the road with a burning engine on two occasions - the original engine, and the first replacement engine. She is currently driving on the second replacement engine (3rd in total). It was all replaced under warranty but I would never want my wife stranded on the side of the road with a burning engine. No thanks, not at any price, and not matter how nice the designs are.
