I know that is the argument everyone will use. But you will always have the 42795 deaths with or without driverless , unless every car on the road will be driverless but they won't be. I will never sit in a driverless car, never ,ever , ever, I won't even be in the passenger seat of a moving car as it is today. So if you have one driverless car killing someone, then you will just have 42,796 deaths. That's how I see it.
about a third of those fatalities are due to alcohol which would go away with auto-driving vehicle.
Every day, about 37 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes — that's one person every 39 minutes. In 2021, 13,384 people died in alcohol-impaired driving traffic deaths — a 14% increase from 2020. These deaths were all preventable.
and as for fast, when you get down around he 2-3 second range it's quick.
Although, I can remember in the late sixties, I was riding in the back of our new Dodge Polara, everyone else was asleep.
Long straight road in Maine around 11:30-midnite. My Dad handed me his pocket watch and said to tell him when the second hand hit the 12.
He had been doing 60 and hammered it and brought it up to 100. it was right around 13 seconds. He was pretty pleased with himself that it was quick.
I chuckle now, I think a few of my cars will do that in sub 4 seconds.
I know I've ad several occurrences when I was annoyed by traffic, got on it hard and looked down and was shocked at how fast I was going.
I'm not sure I could time the bike from 60-100 If I did it in second it wouldn't involve a gearshift.

With the Aprilia RSV4 after various attempts we managed a 0-60 mph time in 3.10 seconds. 0-100 km/h in 3.21.
Regardless, the Aprilia RSV4’s 0-100 mph time is cracked in wickedly fast time of 5.55 seconds.
The Aprilia RSV4 manages 0-200 km/h in 7.45 seconds which puts it firmly in high-end Supercar/Hypercar territory.
The Aprilia RSV4 can dip under 11 seconds to sprint to 150 mph with a time of 10.62 seconds.
From there on it struggles a little compared to some of its competitors with a 0-180 mph time in 22.42 seconds.

Speed is a relative thing. Grandma’s modern SUVs are way faster than that Healey. But sitting close enough to touch the pavement with the door open helps the illusion of speed and enjoyment of driving, and with the top down it doesn't get any better. With sports cars, at least in my mind, it always has been and will be about the handling and not the speed.

Oh I agree on that Dave, I've always said there isn't anything like taking a Sprite into a decreasing radius corner at 45 mph. ( cuz you know you're going to die!!!! aaargh)

I was tempted to get one but the dealer and I were simply to far apart on the value of my current vehicles.

Currently negotiating a beater/paddock wagon to replace Farmtruck. Looking at old Touaregs because the indicator and wiper stalks are the same layout as the Q7 (this matters), they're good enough off-road with a diff lock, they they can tow 7700lb, and they're basically a budget Cayenne.
Found one that's not moving from a dealer due to it having an exhaust described as 'quite loud" and they've been dropping the price on it without catching anyone. Not a worry for me, I can just pick up an OEM exhaust from the wreckers and spend a couple of hours wrenching. Asked for photos, looks clean enough inside and out for a 15yo vehicle. Ask for photos of the underside (no one does in NZ, we don't have salted/gritted roads so corrosion is rarely an issue) and it's clean under there too...
...and then I spot the brand tag on the suspension. It's a $4600 setup. Not a bad freebie for something I'm offering roughly $5300 for.
