Never rewound the coil. Used wintergreen oil on the tires for better traction. We swapped tires around a lot, that seemed to be the biggest deal not having the back end swing out on a turn to far and lose it!

I remember dual winding the armature with silver wire. Think it was something like 22-gauge stuff.
Also, annealing the magnets in hot sand baths. All kinds of black magic stuff.
I have several tubs packed away in the basement. At one point, I had a setup that was 10x4 laying over a pool table. I had Tomy/AFX, 1/64th scale, and was able to put down 62' of track. Using an app/design tool, I had the left and right tracks within 1/2 inch of each other overall length. I used foam board to build up elevation at some parts.
The first pic is 2 stitched together, very poorly, but you get the idea. The front straight, left straight and back straight were connected by bank turns and you'd get quite a bit of speed there, then it would drop into the corkscrew at the upper right the back and forth, under a tunnel, over a hill...
I would have loved to go to a larger scale, maybe 1/32 car and 1/24th track, but you need so much more space to do a large layout.

In the old days I had enough Aurora sets (at least 4 sets plus many extra pieces) to easily cover our ping pong table plus more. Sure wish I still had it all.

In my late teens I picked up a box of HO track for cheap at a goodwill store.
We had enough track that we had to put multiple power strips in or the cars wouldn't make it all the way around the track.
Had a Doctors appt this morning . We've become friends over the last couple years and we talk cars. He's a former S2000 owner and has some very nice rides.
For the last couple years I've been hearing about his Corvette project. Today he told me he's going to sell it. It's a 1972 painted in dark corvette green with a little blue micro flake paint. It has an LS9 and upgraded suspension and drive components and new black leather interior. It took him 5 years to build. He's asking 225K for it. I didn't choke or laugh and it's a SEMA quality build. He didn't spare any expense. So if anyone wants a 9 second street car here's an opportunity and it's green.

At one point, I had all the diagrams and plans for a hard wired track. Obviously I never got to it. I did however, add an electronic timing system that used a lightbeam instead of the little plastic clickers. It also kept lap times. Was pretty cool, even with my very unstable build of the light tower.
I had started with the F1 International set. Designed for 4 lanes and you could build all the circuits used in say... 1997 or so? Then I found a local guy selling a box of pieces and I bough that. Plus visits to the local shop for anything else I wanted. I had (still have) a large inventory, probably 2 decent storage tubs full.
