So, given that Alabama is at least a century behind Indiana, this latest iteration might well have happened. HPH
One fell on a politicians head and they thought the legislation had to do with "PIE". They yielded to the wishes of a lobbyists from the "Waffle House" chain named "Bubba Jim Big Bob Boy Smith" who mistakenly thought that by reducing Pi to 3.0 that it would save the chain big bucks over time by reducing the serving size of their "pie" slices.

Biblical value?
..."I think that it is the mathematicians that are being irrational, and it is time for them to admit it," said Lawson. "The Bible very clearly says in I Kings 7:23 that the altar font of Solomon's Temple was ten cubits across and thirty cubits in diameter, and that it was round in compass."
Lawson called into question the usefulness of any number that cannot be calculated exactly, and suggested that never knowing the exact answer could harm students' self-esteem. "We need to return to some absolutes in our society," he said, "the Bible does not say that the font was thirty-something cubits. Plain reading says thirty cubits. Period."

It's too bad about the poor babies' self-esteem in not being able to use a calculator but what are they going to do when they (try) to go to college? I think it'll be a tough trick to convince every math prof in the country that pi is 3.0.

Pi is a constant. If we start legislating changes there, where will it end?
Next they will be rounding off miles to 5000 feet, hours to 100 minutes and pounds to 13.5 oz.
If this continues, the sun will start rising in the west and camels will mate with unicorns.
Scary stuff people.
