Airlines: Good or Bad Ones, in your Experiences?
#22
Last year (2008) I flew almost 100,000 miles. In that 100,000 miles, there were 4 International - 3 to China and one to Japan.
The airlines I avoid like the plague - one word NORTHWEST. They don't care about anything related to customer service. EVERY time I have flown Northwest in the last 3 years, they have lost my luggage.
Other airlines that I am not especially excited about - US Air (cattle call airlines). The last 3 times I have flow US Air, their flights have been delayed 3 hours twice and 1 hour one time. I remarked to my wife that maybe US Air has hired a manager from Northwest.
Delta - horrible
United - like driving a Toyota corolla - it gets you there but it no fun
Frontier - horrible
American - see United
Airlines that I actually somewhat enjoy flying on - Southwest and Continental.

My experience has been that unless you are high up in an airline's frequent flier program, or buying first class tickets, then they are all pretty much the same. American treated me great during the years that I was doing 100,000+ miles. Now that I've fallen into the 50,000 mile tier I'm just another parcel to be delivered.

After paying for first class flight tickets in March, for our May flights to Spring Fling, going home, Jerry and I got put on coach flights, got stuck in Phoenix overnight, and got home about 15 hours late. We all know First Class tickets cost much more than coach. In fact the difference for the exact same flights was , $410 each person, on the return leg. So, wouldn't you expect a refund of $410 each person after paying for first class and flying in coach? I did. US Air issued me a total refund of $89.19 for each person.
I called American Express and asked if they could do anything about it since I already paid for the tickets on my March statement. They could and they are! I LOVE AMERICAN EXPRESS! I explained the situation to the woman and she was even more excited than I was that the computer let her open up a grievance for me, thinking that it might not because it was more than 60 days since I had purchased the tickets. She put in a dispute for $820. Jerry still missed work for a day, and it messed up our Monday. I know US Air did a decent job with the broken airplane, and did get us home, but it is beyond insulting, refunding me $89 for tickets that I would have to pay $410 to purchase.
Once again, I love American Express. I use my AE Costco card every where that takes it, and most places do. When I was getting the run around for a refund of the clothes washing machine that I paid for that wasn't in stock 2 weeks later, AE took care of it for me. When I call AE, I get a person relatively quickly on the line and they are friendly and helpful.

I've spent around 100 hours in the air already this year, and my least favorite airline (By far) is American- Horrible horrible horrible.. I have had several great flights on Hawaiian Airlines, though the did strand me in Honolulu for 2 days enroute to PagoPago (the horror) they paid for a decent hotel and gave me a 1st class upgrade when I got back in the air. When I get home from this current trip, I have to fly Florida to Malaysia twice in a row, that ought to be interesting.

I am a dedicated AA flier. Out of DFW that is about your only choice. I have been a high mileage flier since 1985. I have logged almost 3 million miles on AA and have 6 digit balances on a few other airlines.
With that being said I feel that if you take your tier one airlines and toss them into a paper bag and just picked one I do not think that you can find much of a differance. I am talking about AA, UA, NWA / Delta, etc. You will have good and bad flights even on the best airlines.
I find on AA flights the perks I get make the journey a little more tolerable.
