Like Deb, I love languages. I think it is fantastic that you are learning Japanese.

My current research is on the language of a stone-age indigenous culture of Mexico. There are thirty known languages in the family -- some extinct -- ranging across North America. I go down and live with my host family for weeks at a time -- analyzing and describing the language and recording texts and stories for posterity. The languages and cultures of the Americas are dying out rapidly, being replaced by the culturally dominant European languages.

Sorry S, I've forgotten your occupation if you've revealed it elsewhere but are you a linguist? That's what I wanted to be before husband and kids caused a slight detour. Living with the natives is the only way to go if you can manage it. I'll bet you have some interesting stories to tell. Good for you for recording for posterity. I would one day like to do the same thing with the Gullahs off the coast of North Carolina before that language dies out.

A long time friend from high school recently reminded me that when we were asked (way back then) what we wanted to be when we grew up, I replied "an interpreter for the United Nations" and everybody laughed. This was at a time when we were told that realistically, we should only take vocational courses. Seems I've always loved languages and I tell anyone who'll listen that you had to learn English therefore, you could, if you really wanted to, learn any language. In fact, I learned more about the English language by studying other languages than by studying English itself.

OK...I'm bumping this one up. No breeze to shoot today? I'm still recovering from my weekend in Va Beach with the Mid-A club. Lots of fun. I hope most peeps are OK with my choice for CO. I didn't expect to please everyone of course, but I think Chaz will do well, and seems enthusiastic about it, which is a big plus.

I love your choice of Chaz, MsP.

On another note, do you have any pics from your weekend? Did you post any?
