The company wants employees to shoulder more of the healthcare costs. For people like me, that doesn't mean too much of an increase. But for other people, especially those with families, it could actually mean an overall decrease in net income (even with the proposed raises).
The Union is also pressuring SBC for job security. One of the CEOs wrote in an e-mail that they were all for job security, as long as we were competitive in terms of wages and benefits with outside contractors.
That SOUNDS good until you realize that the contractors they are talking about would probably be able to do our job for less than half what we are paid and not even require benefits...

better?
I think it would have been okay to leave the quote, though, because the e-mail was written basically to show the "good" side of the company. They want us to believe that it's the union causing trouble for everyone else.
But every story has two (or more) sides, ne? *sigh* I just want it to be over and for everybody to be happy.

I'm surprised that the union is willing to stike over healthcare benefits and job security. It's been a while since most unions have felt strong enough to stike over these issues. On the other hand, your company's work can't be exported so the union has a bit of leverage.
Either way, good luck.
