I jacked it up. If I rotate the rear wheels in a direction like I'm moving in reverse, it slips for a second and then catches. The other wheel moves with the one I'm turning, and the driveshaft rotates. When I try to move them like I'm going forward, it clickity clicks, but never engages the driveshaft or the opposite wheel.

Does this mean the diff is intact, and maybe just the pinion gear is damaged?

THanks!

actually, if the lsd is ok, and you spin one tire, eventually the other tire will spin in the OPPOSITE direction

Okay, update

The wheels engage with each other and lock after about 1/8th of a turn either direction. They never rotate opposite directions .

I drained the fluid. Nothing chunky came out of the drain hole, though the fluid was quite black. I also didn't smell any clutch type smell either which makes me thing the trial engagements of the clutch were actually frying my competition clutch.... grrrr.

Anyway - I'm going to try to buy a complete pumpkin from an 00 S2k tonight, and just switch it out. I'll then take the old one, and have the gears, and comptech housing, maybe a stronger diff put in. As long as I'm nice to the stock one - no more clutch drops - it should last for a good couple months of casual driving.
