Default YES! and NO! on scanners, OBD

Came home yesterday afternoon, the good news was that my wife was already washing her S2000, and has adopted the double-bucket process even when I'm not watching. The bad news is, she said she's getting a check-gas-cap indicator (I drove that car for seven years, never knew it had one!) I figured "Blonde!" and checked the cap myself. This AM she says it's still on.

I could take it to a shop, but figured, hmm, check the code myself? I know people with OBD scanners I might borrow but why not pick one up? A quick forum search and I read that not all scanners work on all cars, and something called "CAN" arose in those discussions. Very well, Amazon shows various scanners with that capability, but are there any specific brands/models that are known to work -- or not work -- on a 2007 S2000? And, of course, cost is an object; above a certain cost, I'll simply take the car in for service.

^I have something similar, except I have a wifi version, and use it with my iPhone. You could also consider the ultraguage, I saw S~factor recommend it in the "Getting better fuel economy" thread; it's a standalone that you can use to monitor stuff (i.e. fuel economy ).

I own a Cen-Tech scanner; works flawlessly.

I store my car over the winters and the battery is pulled, thus resetting the ecu. Come spring when my S comes out of hibernation, it's also time for my state emissions. My scanner has a 'readiness' feature that indicates when the ecu has finished cycling after a certain amount of miles in order to prevent a premature rejection (I love this feature). It also reads & clears codes and supports OBDII & CAN.

Question: do those bluetooth code readers create parasitic current draw? If you leave them inserted for a couple of weeks, are there any problems with that?

For many of them, yes, based on what I've read. Several guys killed their high $ lithium car batteries that way.

If you get a code for a gas cap or evap or a misfire. You have to do 3 driving cycles for the light to go away. Provided you fixed the problem. Basically you have to take 3 trips of 10 miles or more.

Thanks everyone -- except I don't own a cell phone (really! And I like it that way), wouldn't mind a non-bluetooth one. I'll look into the Centech.

...and my wife's commute is really short, so she has not gone nearly that far yet. Today is our 32nd anniversary and she wants to go to Annapolis (+/- 50 miles RT?) for dinner, perhaps we'll take the Honda instead of the Boxster.

Mine did. Killed 1 battery and 2 alternators (from driving it once every other week during the winter, alternator was always 100% load charging basically and blew the one or more diodes in the diode pack/voltage regulator).

They're great, but you should obviously unplug them when not in use.
