wtf do you do?
Not my car but my son's new find. runs fine, but compression is at 120 lbs per cyl...shop says cannot rebuild due to the way these engines are made, need expensive and specialized tools to hone cyl. so what do you do???
does not use oil so far, timing chain stretched. shop says needs a rebuild. 175,000 miles

It sounds like that shop or that person at that shop has no clue. Also, compression is measured in PSI not lbs. Based on your location, if I were you, I would take it to Blacktrax Performance in Fremont and have them perform a compression test.

But JDM or USDM swaps are easy to come by if it actually needs a rebuild. Why does it need a rebuild again?

Doesn’t Ballad make a timing correction gear that will take up a bit of slack from a stretched chain? IDK if that will solve the low compression, but might be worth a try if it really is caused by chain stretch (I have a hard time believing that is the case).

that shop sounds like they have no idea what they are talking about. Take it to a place that specializes in s2000's, Black trax as mentioned earlier is a great shop. Anything from Ballade I would skip by a mile......Im also curious as to why you had the compression checked if everything runs fine???

Also it should be noted on the compression side that certain testers will read lower than others (sometimes by A LOT). If it's consistent across the board, that's the most important thing.
For example, the autozone POS testers usually read 30-50 psi lower than my OTC Compression Tester.
I'm also curious why you had it tested to begin with. I bet @Billman250 would have something to say about the slop. Possibly you can just install a new tensioner that will compensate for it...or just replace the chain.

Per the service manual.
Compression:
Nominal: 228psi
Minimum: 135psi -- Yep one-hundred thirty-five
Max Variation: 28psi
Most are close to the nominal.
