Noise in that vid does not sound like a spun bearing. I can call them right away

Bottom line with the valves... a .008 feeler gauge should fit on the intake side with some drag. You will need to force it in there slightly.
A .007 should go in without force and no drag.
A .009 should go in with extreme force, or not at all.

Same logic with a .010 and the exhaust side.

Is it possible you adjusted one valve while it was partially engaged on the lobe of the cam? that would give you big clearance and noise.
For reference, even a valve at .012 will not tick like that in the video.

I dont follow the timing settings in the book. I simply do it like this:

Set number one so the cam lobes point away from the engine, and mirror each other, like this \ / then adjust, then do cyls 3, 4, then lastly 2.

Could it also be possible you broke a cam cap?

Were all the valve adjusters completely backed off when you tightened down the caps?

You CAN do it without backing them off, but I dont recommend it to anyone unless you have a very high level of mechanical ability and understand how to pull them down methodically.

When I adjusted the valves I pulled the rocker thing up so it was up against the camshaft then I did the adjustment.

What is the cam cap?

My procedure for the valve adjustment was to 1-3-4-2 cylinders each time setting the cam marks in the appropriate orientation, I verified the rocker thing was up against the cam and the lobs were at 10 and 2

No need to push the rocker thing against the cam. The feeler gauge will do that.

Cam caps. There are 5 of them. Each one has 4 bolts. They are numbered 1-5. You removed them to remove the cams and do the retainers.

10 and 2 oclock is good, appears you did them right.

All your intakes should have been around 9 or 10 before you started. The exhausts should have been around 10-12. (valve clearance does not change with a retainer job, only if you backed the adjusters off)

Is this what you came up with when you initially measured? If you backed them all off to do the retainer job the point is moot.

Just a thought, did you use a feeler gauge that reads in inches as 0.008 of one inch ?

When I re-installed the camshafts I followed the torquing procedure in the manual to tighten down the cam caps. I do not think I broke them so hopefully they are holding the camshaft in place. I did scrape the inside head where the camshaft's rear plate roller fits the inside head. I sanded it smooth until my finger nail would no longer catch. Hopefully that isn't the problem. The camshaft rotated freely and smooth.

When I did the retainers the DIY said to loosen the valve adjustment bolts and I did, I think that's where I screwed up valve spec. When everything was put back together I attempted to do the valve adjustment. What I tried to do was stick the bigger feeler gauge of the spec in then tighten it down and adjusted until the lower end of the spec moved freely.

It seems like I did a terrible job on the valve adjustment so I will redo them this weekend.

Thanks for all the help Billman.

Redid my valve adjustments. They were unbelievably loose. And one of the adjustment nuts was finger loose! Anyway I tightened it all back up and it sounds great. Thanks everyone
