i bought my '02 with 19,000mi on it from a friend. so i knew it was well cared for. after 6 mo it started to "burn oil" and i freaked. perused all the searches on the subject, some engines burn oil, some don't. some go through stages where they'll burn, then not burn. spirited driving, normal driving, it makes no difference. now i'm at a quart every 1500 mi mobil 1 and really don't sweat it. i guess with the hi revs, that oil's got to go somewhere! i'd be concerned if you burn more than i qt every 1k mi, or if that black smoke persists. a leak-down test may relieve any fears.

changing the pcv wouldnt be a bad idea. i did this. picked one up from honda. and no kidding, noticed a change in oil consumption. and i get up to 9k quite often. i burn about 1 quart every 1500 miles.

IMO, it realy depends on how you drive. vtech a few times a day and my car drinks oil, otherwise if i take it easy for few weeks nothing at all.

Thanks everyone for your help, I've taken a few stabs at the problem as suggested and your ideas worked wonders.

Replaced the air filter and did a "MAP whack" and have been checking oil religiously (twice per day) and have noticed less alarming drops in quantity. No black clouds either-- I guess the car just needed to clear it's throat.

Thanks again, I really appreciate the help and look forward to becoming part of the community in the future
