Marcucci,

I'm aware of a couple of cases where the owner knows, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that their car was NEVER overrevved. Despite the fact that they bought the car second-hand with tens of thousands of miles on the odometer. They KNOW it was never overrrevved. They also know that the clutch was never dumped on their car, etc.

Are there people who dropped valves on AP1's that had indeed never been overrevved? I'm sure there are some. But not nearly as many as the Internet would lead you to believe.
Are you being serious? How do you know, as a second owner, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that the car wasn't over-revved?

I'm not necessarily doubting the people, but I can't tell you how many stories I've heard of dealers wrecking cars during service calls (on a test drive, on the dealer lot, falling off a lift, etc.), then repairing them and not ever telling the customer. Or chanign oil and forgetting to put fresh oil in, then test-driving the car only to have the oil light on... then filling and not telling the customer. Or mis-shifting and over-revving and bending valves and fixing it without telling the customer... this stuff happens.

I do agree that the stories on the web are probably hyped. I also am not trying to dissuade anyone from doing the swap, as I think it's wise and cheap insurance.

$700-$1500 for parts and labor.

Call around to your local shops for a price quote. If they're not experienced, it can cost more.

And lose the attitude. You're the one asking for help.

Actual cost of parts: $48.16 for AP2 keepers and retainers for intake side, free shipping. PM for info from who, good dealership, OEM stuff.
Keep the stock springs. Replace intake side retainers and keepers only, don't bother with the exhaust side, they don't crack.

Labor? Don't have a clue, but it took me a few hours.

so why is there such a wide range as far as pricing goes?

The parts don't seem expensive for AP2 retainers at least and the labor time doesnt seem to be more than a few hours either...

You kill me.

Why don't you call a local shop to get a quote?

I could tell you that the upgrade would only cost $100 and a case of beer, but that wouldn't apply to you.

I could tell you that the upgrade costs $1500 because the Honda dealership marks parts up 2x retail and will only do it if you pull the head.

I could tell you that a great shop does it for $500, but it's 500 miles from where you are and you'd have to burn tanks of gas and get a hotel to get the car done.

Just like every single thread you've posted, do YOUR homework. If you're budgeting down to your last penny to get into this car, you're going to be in a world of hurt. Whether it's insurance costs that are higher than you thought, needing a new set of $600 tires every 10k miles, or "money shifting" into 2nd gear, if you don't have a cushion you're going to be hurting.

Here again is the DIY link with part numbers:

And some people have found cracked AP1 exhaust retainers.

Like I said, you could have it done for $100 and a case of beer, but YMMV.
