Gutting the cat will not provide the same benefits as a test pipe because I don't think a cat is a straight-through design. You are creating a resonator chamber by gutting it wouldn't you not?
You WILL get a benefit though with the test pipe. As Bullet1123 has pointed out (I was there), he got at least 6-7hp but for my ears anyway, it was just too darn loud for
city driving. A test pipe on an already aggressive exhaust will have cops running
out of donut shops to find you.

I should have mentioned that I borrowed a J's single exhaust for a couple months, and it was FREAKIN' LOUD! It was WAY louder than it was on the S2000 that it came off of.
I don't recommend gutting the cat. I did that to a previous car of mine, and it sounded like crap. I also don't think it gained any power. A test pipe should be the same diameter all the way through. A gutted cat will cause the exhaust gasses to slow down then speed up as it flows through the empty chamber.

Be prepared for very smelly exhaust and the complaints from any friends that will follow you with their windows open (or a/c set on fresh).
