Default Will an F20c pass smog with 9.0:1 compression ?

Hey, thinking about saving up to purchase an F20C block to build and swap out with my motor in the near future.

Two questions: (1) Any of you know how much the F20C block is? And is it standard to come with the pistons? or can I just order the block itself?

(2) Will it pass smog with lower compression?

Usually the block comes complete with pistons, rods and crank. I haven't priced one, but I'll bet you could get a brand new one for under $2k. I would suggest looking for a used or wrecked one and having it sleeved. I'll bet you could pick up a damaged one (scratched bores) for less than $500 and then have it sleeved and equipped with pistons for less than $1500 more.

9.0:1 shouldn't be a problem for emissions. It will actually reduce your oxides of nitrogen IMO.

While on the subject, how does boost pressure vs. compression ratio affect the emissions?

If lowering the compression reduces emissions, how much does the added boost increase them?

The short block is roughly $2,000 cost for a dealership. That's block, crank, pistons, and rods all assembled.

Boost will increase emissions a lot. You're burning more fuel and generally running richer. However, since emissions testing should never get into boost, there shouldn't be any _measurable_ problem. :-)

During an emissions test, couldn't you theoretically just set your waste gate to start bleeding at say.. 1psi?

I've actually heard that a car on 1psi, properly tuned, has lower emissions and higher fuel efficiency than a NA motor.

Also, just looking at that Honda Automotive Parts link... There are two parts, the block and the head... I would have thought that the block was only that - the block, and the head was only that - the head...

Does either part include valves, springs, pistons, etc? I thought the cost of a new engine unfitted, was about $8000. Those prices seem too cheap to me.

Ummm that price Majestic lists is probably for just the block, nothing else... Also if you read Wes' comment, he said that $2000 is probably around the DEALER'S cost, not retail.

Import Builders can build up a short block using a new block and all new hardware with Cunningham Rods and Arias pistons for $5000 shipped. That price includes top-notch stuff that will out-rev the stock setup, and handle more abuse. Also, they will build it to whatever compression ratio you want. That's a great deal considering you could get an 11K rpm block turning 12.5:1 built for what the Feel's Stroker alone would run... New block, new everything, and will out-rev the current motor? Hmm..... interesting, most interesting.... I know my Christmas project.

Heh, Arias pistons = diesel engines if you've ever heard 'em.
