It doesn't. It falls out. I can't understand why the OP didn't pull over immediately and shut down the engine.

i dont understand either, why couldnt you u just pull over, what made you think u could drive another 1.5 miles with no oil? even if there was no shoulder. thats an emergency, people can go around you.

This exact thing happened to me. I didn't tighten my drain bolt enough and it popped out on the side of the road. I parked 10 seconds right after, with smoke pouring out of the drain. I had burnt oil which was switched out. and no problems as a result (LUCKILY).

usually when the light comes on it is too late for you anyways... best of luck to you.

well for all of you the bolt was torqued to 30 lbs. and no I couldn't pull over in the instance because i was in heavy traffic and there was no shoulder...but to you all with suggestions thank you for your input

Idk about you, but the other people can wait. Maybe you can afford a new engine but if that happened to me theres going to be alot of pissed people behind me. But its not going to cost me 4 grand or whatever a new engine/rebuild will cost.
