I believe its perfectly normal, on my S2 the vtec kick in like that, it came and go with the oil change...for some reason....dunno why.....
i'll tell u something i liked it when it kicked in like that.......
i wouldn't worry.....i believe u might wanna check the oil level......

I wouldn't worry to much, i've driven honda's all my life and sometimes its an smooth transition to vtec and sometimes vtec just kicks in like a bat out of hell.....i believe it depends on the oil level....when its it's a bit low the vtec will kick harder making it feel like there is a hesitation...i actually like the hesitation cause i feel like the vtec is stronger.....just my opinion..
