I just got my oil change done and they put in 5W-20 fully synthetic oil (royal purple).
IRMC

(IIRC it's an official acronym)

wrong cap I imagine. your My00 US car should say 10w30 on the cap, but the manual should tell you 5w40 is also acceptable.

13 years ago, the OP discovered that he had the wrong cap - which is the most logical reason.

Yeah saw that, but thought he was speculating... and I wanted to know, because I have the same question about my cap.. I've owned the car since 05 (2nd owner) so just found it a very strange coincidence that we both would have the same cap swapping scenario

Seems like y'all two are not the only ones. K series caps must just be strewn about the place for anyone to take.

To answer your root question, 00-09 S2000's spec out 10W30. All S2000 caps should say 10W30.

Actually the best oil to use is 0W30, M1 synthetic. Everyone agrees completely.

To be safe and sure, always go with what the manufacturer recommends and if any issues, test it.

That being said, if using best blends or synthetics you can use many different weights depending on your application. If you live in a cold environment 0-30, if warm environment 10-30, if tracking 10-40, 20-50 and there are other combos. What ever you choose, change oil and filter. Filtration is very important, in some ways as important as the oil, as they keep contaminates out of the engine.

if you drive in severe conditions, change at half intervals.

Thanks
