Default Whirring Sound in all gears even neutral

Hi everybody, this is my first post since aquiring a MY2000 S2000 2 weeks ago

I've just found a slight problem, i've done a search but nothing has come up to my problem.

I've just changed the oils, engine, gearbox etc. I have a whirring sound comming from what might be the gearbox or it could be the axle not sure. It's a whirring sound that is evident it all gears and even neutral when coasting to a stop. I'm sorta hoping it's not a gearbox, but is it possible it could be a rattley clutch release bearing ? It goes into gear easily in every gear. I couldn't change the diff oil as i couldn't get a socket on the end of it as well as the wrench. any ideas ???

I've had the car up on the ramps and there's no leakage anywhere or anything i can see that has worn.

I was going to pop into Honda to get a mechanic to test drive it for 2 mins to see if they could point me in the right direction.

Thanks for any help.

A whirring sound is frequently related to the pinion gear. This is not good.

I thought a whirring sound is the one....

The Differential.

I'm sorry to hear that man.

I hope it's a small fix.

Thanks guys I'll source a 2nd hand unit or may be a recon one any ideas to the price ... Roughly ?

Should be cheaper than a gearbox.... Only got really bad last 200 miles, got a workshop manual and my mate and I are pretty handy so if I get a diff for a good price we could probably do it.

Thanks for the replies.... Appreciated !

hard improper launches can cause diff failure.

If it sounds anything like this :

It is a blown-diff.

I hope that's not your problem.
