whine coming from transmission, not diff

Well, with the clutch out, the input shaft on the tranny's spinning even if the car's not in gear so, that might be your "spinning" sound.
I'd have a look at the shop manual, PDF of it's floating around on the internet. The tailshaft housing is where these OP's bearings are located.
Page 13-12 shows a nice blowup of the tailshaft housing which seems to include 2 bearings and an intermediate driveshaft someone already mentioned. It looks like you could replace these bearings without digging too deeply into the tranny. I might even be tempted to try to do it without removing the tranny though, that's just guesswork.

A bad secondary reduction shaft bearing will be noisy any time the car is moving, in or out of gear.
The most likely bearing to gall is the tapered roller bearing. It's the highest bearing in the trans, and I suspect is the 1st to starve for oil if the transmission isn't filled all the way.
The tailshaft can be removed with the trans in the car, but the bits of damaged bearing will still be in the rest of the trans. The correct way to repair is the disasemble and clean out all of the bearing debris and the oil pump screen. Replace the damaged bearings and reassemble.
