Default whine coming from transmission, not diff

I was getting a whining noise for a few thousand miles, and thought it was the differential, but instead it was the transmission. I dropped the car off at my dealer, and I was hoping the noise was caused by a faulty 1-2 grind fix they did a few months ago, but they told me the bearings in the rear of the tranny, where it hooks up to the driveshaft, that's where the noise is coming from.

There's I think 5 bearings there, and my service manager said 2 were "galled," whatever that means, causing the noises. I don't know transmission internals at all, and was wondering if this made sense to any of you.

I'm glad I don't have to replace the entire transmission...

The galling of a metal bearing is caused by rubbing or friction causing a bearing to wear away or seize.

thinking back to my degree days, galling is where similar metals sieze to each other. eg stainless steel nut and bolt. if there is no lubrication and the clearances are tight then they rub bits of metal off the contacting surfaces, this then picks up and causes a seizure.. i suspect that the service manager just means that the bearing surfaces have worn and broken up slightly.

thanks for the explanation, but I'm still trying to figure out what could have caused this, since I haven't seen a single post on this...

do you get the whine when you decelrate from VTECing? or from high speed?

The sound is present at all speeds, gets louder with acceleration, but can really hear it when slowing in neutral...

hope this doesn't happen to anybody else...

It turns out the secondary driveshaft also needs to be replaced, luckily it's only about a $100...
