I also hate pillar mounted guages. It just screams out "Please race me" or "Hi Mr. Officer, I like speeding"
The only one I've seen so far that I've actually thought looks cool is the Mugen/M-Tec one:
Seeing as how it's made by Mugen, one can only imagine how many thousands of dollars they're going to charge for it.

Rick's sells a gauge set for the radio door - http://www.ricks2k.com/products/gaugeset.php
Maybe buy or do something similar on your own.

I put mine in the radio door. I did it myself so it is not quite as pretty as Rick's from the back side, but looks good from the front. It took some time and trial and error, but they work now.

Ricks door is too expensive for my taste. Nice setup but just too much money, also visibility is an issue with this setup. Maybe if the gauges recorded. But i dont want to keep lookin down while im driving

i don't have the picture anymore but i made a custom mount on the left side of the dash. i had to take out my stock remote radio controls, and the left upper vent, but it came out really nice. i mounted three gauges there with a piece of plexiglass and some bondo and paint.
