Mine's doing the same thing. Happens about 20-30% of the time for me. I wonder if I can use that as any indication of the life left.
Biggest thing is I don't want to be stranded somewhere.
Probably going to have to do the clutch in 5-10k miles and will do the starter then.....just have to hope that it will last that long.

I used to get this about once every 2-3 weeks when it got "cold" here in the SF Bay Area, meaning 50s. Now it's dropped to the 40s-50s and I have been doing something different:
I put the key in the ignition, turn it all the way in, and wait for 5-10 seconds.
I'm assuming this is a placebo effect, but I have not gotten the screeching sound ever since. I'm crazy right?

Please read the whole thread before posting.
Billman already said the cause and the fact that its very very common and does not hurt anything beyond over spinning the starter. People have had it for years and the starter still has not gone out.

My car did this almost every time on cold start, until I started holding the start button for a fractionally shorter amount of time. I can get the car to start without grinding almost 100% of the time now.
