Ok, I can try that, but how are wheels (or even tires) going to cause wheel hop?

oh! ive been reading your thread. i remember this occuring in an underpowered FWD racer i had. the car would break IN and OUT of traction violently and shake the car as if the wheels where tucking in and out.

i had those same tires on my s. and they did not spin smoothly till the tread was almost gone. also MY rear STRUTS were blown when i was experiencing the issue. check for leaking struts. observe the inboard side of each for "oil drips, runs"

hope that may help you! definetly not your driving.

I was thinking it may be the tires, not the wheels...I just suggested putting on a differant tire that was already mounted. Could be how the tire has worn, hardness etc. As others have said, I'd try this before spending money on other things, it won't cost you a cent.

I wish there was a 'technical' section where all the non-technical people would be banned from posting.

Anyway, I have 98K on my 2006 and I also get wheel hop when I accelerate in a manner that just slightly exceeds traction limits. If I greatly exceed traction limits, I don't get wheel hop. I'd love to see a slow motion video of the rear wheels during wheel hop.

Default Solution

Someone reminded me to come back to this thread to update the solution. It was tires.

When it was time for new tires, I fit S04's, and problem went away.

I did check everything else mentioned. All was fine. Suspension, bushings, all mounts, etc

As mentioned earlier in the thread, old tires, fit by PO, were Kumho Ecxta LE.

Also to reiterate, THIS IS NOT A LAUNCHING SCENARIO. I don't launch my car. The wheel hop was occurring with any wheelspin, such as taking a hard corner at full throttle shortly after taking off.

Now that the S04 are mounted, wheelspin isn't much of thing anymore. Still, if I do try for it, like on a wet road with vsa disabled (for no other purpose than to investigate for wheelhop), the wheelhop no longer occurs.
