What is this sound in the rear end?
There is a banging sound in the rear end of my car and im not sure what it is.
Started about a week ago after canyon runs. At first it was just a few pops then i didnt hear it again for a long time. Took my car out again to the canyons yesterday and now the sound is almost constant. Happens when im going straight, rarely when turning. I have checked under the car and everything is visually good.
I did do a cv bucket swap about 5k miles ago. Also i did install swift spec-r springs and a wicked tuning rear bump steer kit about 2k miles ago. My first thought was it is the bump steer kit. Then the sound came more often and started to sound like it is something spinning. Maybe the axle or diff
I do have a video so you can hear this horrible sound yourself.

Sounds like the dif, or possible propeller shaft has a broken cage.
Drain the dif. if the magnet is void of any large particles, it's not the dif.
With that much noise the dif magnet would be quite chunky.
Also, put the car on stands and turn the propshaft by hand. It may easily become aparent what the issue is.

is it safe to assume that the problem is actually the diff then? what options do i have? does the entire assembly need to be replaced? can i use an ap2 diff on my 03?

well the diff was replaced, sound is still there but not as loud. More like when it first started.
Seems to happen the most around 30mph and almost not at all between 70-80mph.
So i guess its the prop shaft or an axle. I dont see anything that is visibly wrong with either. Not sure how much play there should be on the prop shaft, if any.

So you swapped your diff because of someones advice that you don't even know if they know what they are talking about? That fluid looked old and shavings pretty bad but not to the point where it looked like the diff was shot. Rarely when turning to me would mean its not the differential. Did you try billmans suggestion on propshaft turning?

really i expected billman to post again but he never did...it was stupid but i assumed the correct information had been posted already and thats why no one else was bothering to chime in.
