What is hypoid gear oil?
I'm going to be changing the differential oil this weekend and ust wondering what the significance of hypoid gear oil is. I read many threads regarding the differential oil change but don't recall the explanation of hypoid. Only reason I ask is because I'm planing on using Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil which does not state that it is a hypoid type. I'm just trying to follow Honda's fluid requirements whcih calls for hypoid GL5 or GL6.

Hypoid? Doesn't that refer to the cut of the gear's teeth? I think so. Hypoid gear oil = oil for hypoid Gears.
I believe Hypoid designates the type of Gear, not the type of Oil.
Anyone else?

The difference between a spiral bevel and a hypoid is the offset of the pinion. With a spiral bevel, the centerline of the pinion axis meets the centerline of the gear axis. They only have a rolling motion, like the cylindrical gears in the transmission.
With a hypoid set, the pinion centerline is offset either above (typical front axle in a 4x4) or below (typical rear axle) the gear centerline. This makes for a larger pinion head, but also causes a sliding motion. The sliding pretty much scrapes away the oil film of a standard oil, and you get metal to metal contact. As long as you have an oil with an EP additive and the right viscosity you should be fine.

"Honda motorcycles division produces a gear oil labeled 'hypoid gear oil' "
I see it's rated for GL-4/GL-5. That's good. I hope it holds up better than the stock/factory oil that Honda uses in our cars. That crud is shot after 10,000-15,000 miles.
