Default What have you broken on your motor?

Hey, S2Kistas, in the continuing quest to diagnose my problems and hopefully prevent future ones I invite you to share your ummm.... "learning experiences".

Specifically have you:

Broken a timing chain?
Hit pistons with valves?
Broken camshaft pillow blocks? (One already in this forum).
Broken the little timing chain sprocket/cam bolt.
Broken a valve spring?
Broken a retainer? (A few of these in this thread).
Thrown a rod.
Etc....Etc....Etc.

For me I have replaced the stock pistons with un-coated 14 to 1's and scratched the daylights out of the cylinder walls, I think because they were not coated similar to the stockers.

Also I have not properly bled the cooling system and warped a head.

And have blown out a spin on oil fiter gasket on a stock motor running 0:30W oil thrown out four quarts and spun all the rod bearing and bent and cracked a crank and gouged the cylinder walls. (But with new oil the motor still ran! But power was WAYYY down and not enough pressure to trigger the VTEC). Fixed it (I hope) with a high performance oil filter to replace the WalMart special I was using.)

Have fun and let me know, please.

Thanks,

Jim Knapp

Bad Luck, 2poor?

I suppose. More like pushing the motors REALLY hard, and usually when they aren't even warmed up, like cold starting, then 30 seconds of "warm up", then running to the 9600RPM rev limiter and never lifting off the gas for a full 95 seconds, i.e., power shifting everything and then just staying on it.

Those injuries are across three motors so far, but as they say, "$peed cost$. How fa$t do you want to go?"

For those that do not know Jim, his engine resides in the Bonneville streamliner in his avatar. It's certainly not the typical use for the engine.

In 85k miles of combined mileage, I haven't broken anything in either F20C engines that I have driven.

Loose spark plug shot out of the head, taking threads and a coil pack with it.

Using a 9.6 cSt 0W-30 with a 15400-PCX-004 filter.
No problems so far.
No UOA done on the 0W-30 yet.
Will do next year.

What 0W-30 did you use?
Castrol?

hehe funny thread. 26k on the s odo, no problems yet.

but previous honda....civic hatch with built h22a in it whoa nelly.

lets see.
1. all motor stock compression. the ass owner before me had some dumb chip that removed the rev limiter. i didnt know this, missed thirdgear and bent all intake valves.

2. boosted the stock motor, 8psi. a gasket for the balancer shafts popped out becuase the valve cover was being pressurized. i had a hose hooked up wrong. when gasket popped out, car dumped all the oil onto the road. scored the stock sleeves.

3. sleeved block with darton sleeves, je 9:1 pistons, eagle rods. went nutz with stuff. rebuilt it and started tuning. bigest mistake was not picking up an aem. instead used vafc, lm1, and msd boost retard, and cartech fmu. tuned the car at 12psi to 12:1 wot. everything seemed ok. one morning haulin ass to work, car is pullin like a raped ape, then power disappears, i let of gas, wondering wtf. i touch the gas and BOOM. sleeves took the pistons melting like a champ.

speed breaks shit. power breaks shit. i've heard that your not going fast unless your breaking stuff.

Hey spitfire.

I was using Amsoil the only oil I'll use because it has the highest flash point of any oil I've found, an important thing when that pesky oil filter lets go and dumps oil all over your headers at WOT. And please speak English in your posts so I can answer.

And camuman don't forget, you're always making the most power just before it blows up (or something like that).

Darton, J & E and Eagle rods... way to go.

Keep the shiny side up,

Jim

If that happens, no oil will safe your engine (IMO)

Ha

cSt = viscosity.
1 cSt = water.
15400, etc is a Honda part# for the S2000 specific oil filter.
UOA is Used Oil Analysis.

So my Shell is pretty thin, compared to most xxW-30 oils.
"Your" Amsoil 0W-30 (SSO?) is 10.3 cSt at 100C.
(C = Celsius )
Viscosity Index of the Amsoil is 173, mine is "only" 164.
That's gives some info on what needed to be done to get the oil behave like thin oil on lower temps.
Less is "better" (in a way)

True, flash point is high on the Amsoil, 230C - vs - 220C for the Shell.
