Well if you buy the retainers and locks, it cost around $160.00 for parts.
Where are you getting your parts?!

$57.02 shipped from Honda Parts online

It let go because it had a cracked retainter that went undetected, due to a mechanical wrong-gear over-rev. (you can bounce off the limiter all day it will not hurt the car)

From the time of the over-rev, an s2k can go up to 30,000 miles before the valve finally drops.

Bottom line, driver error. And is usually NOT the guys fault who was driving when it let go. It was from a previous owner. at least it has been in the 15 cars I've found with broken retainers. All were 2nd or 3rd owner.

My retainers are like new at 100k miles.
Bill, If i was curious to see if i had some valve/valves in bad condition from a previous owner over revving it- what would I have to do? If i took it to a shop- what would i ask for? I bought my car back in 05 (and was not to wise about car buying practices)- previous owner had it for only 11 months, had carbon fiber emblems, etc.

THis tells me its a pretty good chance my car was driven pretty hard befor i owned it- so long story short my motor has been "chattering" while cold allot more then usual- i am worried that maybe it was a over rev before i owned it and/or driven low on oil. Thanks

over a thousand and a half of an inch of play.
=1000.5 inches of play?
they said to get the guides machined and have to tolerances at around seven hundred tenths of a thousand of an inch.
1 tenth of a thousandth of an inch = 0.1 x 0.001 = 0.0001
700 tenths of a thousandth of an inch = 700 x 0.0001 = 0.0700
