only reason your guys engine is not blowing up is because its still low milage.
Honda does have a track record for designing engines that can't take the factory redline. They need some new engineers so their cars don't keep breaking down.

It let go because it had a cracked retainter that went undetected, due to a mechanical wrong-gear over-rev. (you can bounce off the limiter all day it will not hurt the car)
From the time of the over-rev, an s2k can go up to 30,000 miles before the valve finally drops.
Bottom line, driver error. And is usually NOT the guys fault who was driving when it let go. It was from a previous owner. at least it has been in the 15 cars I've found with broken retainers. All were 2nd or 3rd owner.
My retainers are like new at 100k miles.

Yeah I dunno about the previous owner abusing my car, she had 39,000 on her when I bought it. but now the motor is out of the car in has come clear to me that this is NOT a matching numbers motor in my car, and I found a auto recyclers tag on the block, So someone just put a junkyard motor in my car. no telling how many miles were actually on it. So I am a little PISSED about that. and the carfax was clear.
But on a better note my Head arrived today super clean, its off of a 2001, and believe me the head is coming apart and new retainers installed before i bolt it up LOL.

I have a 1994 Saturn with 250,000 miles on it. The odometer reads 142,000 miles due to said odometer being dead for 11 years and a junkyard transmission due to a grenaded differential. According to carfax the car has done nothing but been reregistered every year since 1999. Carfax can't track crap for a gearhead.

carfax is useless. Ive had wrecks through my shop that do not come up on carfax...EVEN if its reported to insurance and a claim was filed.
Back to your retainers....I use AP2 retainers and keepers on the intake side only. They will withstand an over-rev and not crack.
