what happens if you don't use a new crush washer?

Reviving a slightly old thread - there are two different differential crush washers and they both fit both plugs. It appears that the 90401-PCZ-003 (aluminum?) fits the drain plug and the 90402-PCZ-003 (brass?) fits the fill plug.
Since these are both soft metal and they both seem to fit either plug, which is correct and why is there a difference?

Probably different torque specs, I suspect the one on the drain plug requires tighter torque.
For the fill plug, it probably wouldn't hurt to re-use that one, since it doesn't really see much fluid, anyway, and is unlikely to leak.

The previous owner (a**hole) used crappy tranny fluid and we needed to rebuild because the bearings died. I'm suspicious of the differential fluid that was used based on maintenance history. I'm opting to replace the fluid because I don't trust the previous owner (if only I'd done that for the tranny!) but, as you say, as long as there is a good seal, it may not make a lot of difference. The previous "mechanic" (term used loosely; translated A**HOLE) didn't even use a washer for the fill plug. So I have one re-used washer on the drain and no washer on the fill.
I have purchased both new from Honda and wanted to be sure that I installed them correctly if there was a difference. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Learned something new:
Fill: 90402-pcz-003
Drain: 90401-pcz-003
Why would you not spend a few bucks to seal your diff?
Also, I used a 3' piece of 3/8" tubing and easily squeezed the new fluid into the diff from a higher point - even outside the wheel well. Just snip off the tip of the quart bottle, slide on the tubing, insert the bottom end of the tube into the diff, squeeze alternatively with "burping" the bottle, and you're done. No need for a pump, and the tubing just drains into your collector and is ready for use the next time - no cleanup (except washing of hands).
