I usually use a new washer when change of oil happens...this past two times I have not had a new one...no leaks, no problems. just wondering if anyone has had any issues with not putting on a new crush washer?? and i don't pay attention to which side goes where upon installation.

well the car may explode into a 1000 pieces at which time you may start to notice it will leak oil

They're a "soft" metal and compress to make a better seal. Also they can help prevent over tightening of the drain bolt. I'm sure there's more than those reasons. But they're less than 7 cents at the Honda dealer, go get one.

the honda parts stores will usally give you a new one if you ask. my local dealership has the washer taped to the filter in the rack ready to go.

but to answer your question i have reused them before with no issues - it's not the end of the world if you do - next time ask for one and use a new one...

I guess if you didn't have one available you can reuse for one or two changes but I've never go for too long without changing the drain washer. On my Z it came with this "felt" like material instead of a copper compression washer. I used it for about 2 year for 5-6 oil changes. I switched to the copper oem washer just for the sake of factory recommendations but I didn't have leaks either. I for one bought like 8 washers and just tape it to my door cabinet.

I'll be honest. This may not be the smartest thing ever, but in my first 5 years of owning the car i never used a new crush washer.

interesting there are two camps, "use a new one or else" and "eh its ok"...i agree they are cheap and the first 5 changes were with honda filters with washers taped to the filter wraping...anyway just wanted to see what others thought, this the first car that recommended a washer, since honda is soooo anal about engineering (thankfully)there must be some importance to the use of one?

Man you guys are lucky. I used to not replace it for about 3 or 4 changes. My friend was helping me change my oil and he looked at my washer and said i should replace it. Well i didn't. And well a week later while driving from dinner to Starbucks, I saw my oil light come on. And then a weird noise appeared. I pulled over. Called a tow truck. When I got out there was a puddle of oil. But that is just my story. Turned out the oils drain bolt came loose.
