might sound dumb but did you make sure you tighten down the plug after draining out the oil? =X

Old filter gasket sandwiched between your new filter? Did you hand tighten the filter? They're supposed to be turned another 3/4 turn with a wrench once they're hand tight.

It's either the plug or the filter, or you left the oil fill cap off and turned the car upside down.

My best guess is that it's one of three things:
1. The old o-ring from the filter stuck to the flange where the oil filter mounts. I've never done this, but have heard of prodigious leaks when the new o-ring tightens against the old one.
2. Between the time you wiped a drop of oil on the o-ring of the new filter and the time you tightened it, the o-ring came off the new filter. I've done this one. I can't describe it without using the words "Exon Valdez."
3. The oil filter is nowhere near tight. Worst case, it's cross-threaded and got hard to turn before the o-ring sealed.

You wouldn't get a gusher with the drain plug in place, even if it weren't tight. That would drip, not gush. The filter is under pressure and will gush.

this was fuqing funny.

5 quarts is TOO little for a complete oil change. how much oil are we talking about on the ground here?

perhaps you missed the hole where you pour the oil in...did you get distracted and pour it all over the place and then accidentally pour in the hole when you looked again?

maybe he is over-estimating the number of oil changes he has done?
