What is this Extension off of the Exhaust?

Specifically, it is a Helmholtz resonator. It works to eliminate a specific frequency, thus allowing the car to pass the FMVSS noise requirements.

Has anyone removed this pipe? I'm curious on how much this pipe reduced noise. Has anyone removed the resonator off their stock exhaust system? If anyone has done either of the two, how does it sound? Thanks
