Werid start-up problem
My '01 sometimes doesn't want to start. At first I thought it was a bad battery but I replaced that, and it still doesn't want to start somtimes.
But the funny and weird thing about it is the fact that somtimes the only way to get it to start is to open the drivers door, and leave it open while trying to start it, then like magic, it will start.

You may have a problem with the battery cable connections, either at the battery or at the other ends. An old trick to get a car started when the connections were too corroded or the build up too high was to turn on the headlights and let the current flow for a minute or so, then crank the engine.
Check all the big electrical cabling in your engine bay. Do you see greenish/blue build up in the wire strands, mostly on the ground but can also appear on the positive. You may be in need of new cables or this could be just the excuse you need to install a grounding kit. I don't usually promote grounding kits, but in your case, there may be a benefit. Of course, the cheaper route would be to just get new OEM battery cables if that's what you end up needing.

But what would the opening of the door have to do with it?

I think it would help if you post in detail exactly the sequence of things you do when you start the car on those occasions when you have a problem. Without these details, you're just making us guess.

The only thing I can think of is that it will activate the interior light, which "might" be just enough of a current draw on the battery to get the current to flow better once you crank it. It will also activate the "key in" buzzer. If you had the interior light off, then I have absolutely NO explanation for this.

I kinda wondered why the keyless entry system seemed kinda slow, and the dome lights didn't work right and it wouldn't always start.
But after I tore out all the #@%@ that was part of the anti-theft system, it all works fine now.

Ha ha... it was acutally a poorly installed "Sidewinder 6000 esp" system.

For future reference, it would helpful that you include a description of your mods when asking help to resolve a problem.
