Default went to the dealer....

well, i made a post a long time ago, about the exhaust ringing/whistling i was hearing on my 06. i started hearing it the day i bought the car, and now at 9200 miles, still have it. it would only occur when the car has warmed up a bit, but after driving for a while, would go away. anyways, went to the dealer this morning to have them look at it(seems that it would occur more with the nicer weather), they were able to duplicate it which was awesome, some of you know, that when you have an issue, the day you bring it to the dealer, it goes into hiding. they pulled another 06 or 07 around, wasnt sure what year, to compare it. sure enough, it did the same exact thing!!! i was shocked!! the mechanic said it was coming from that little branch off section on the exhaust right after the cat, that piece that has something to do with drone/resonation...on both cars.

i was very stumped at this. just wanted to see if any of you 06/07 owners may have ran into this, or is this just a rare thing and by chance they pulled another s2k in that had the same ringing. well, thats all, thanks for reading!

This "branch off piece" is called a Helmholtz Resonator. It's used on every factory exhaust for the S2000 on all model years.

okay, thats the name of it, knew it was something like that. well, not sure if the new design of the helmholtz on the 06/07's has anything to do with the ringing/whistling.

Or it could be just exhaust flow over the lip of a flange or even a small burr or imprecise weld causing this. If it doesn't bother you , just count this as a little "personality" that your car may have that most others don't.

Do you have a sound clip of the noise? I have a feeling this might be present on all S2000s but the pre-'06 cars have that noisy air pump that comes on at cold startup, so we probably don't hear the exhaust whistle/ringing sound.

no, i dont have a sound clip. if the pre-06 models have it, i think it would still be noticeable considering, it doesnt start to happen well after the car has warmed up, and i know the pump only goes on for about 20 seconds, right?

i'm considering maybe going back to the dealer and fighting it. i feel i should have asked for them to pull in another s2k, there were 3 of them.

This is weird. I'm tempted to go on a test drive in an '07 just to see if I can pinpoint the noise. About how long do you have to let the car warm up before the noise starts to happen? If the mechanic pulled another S2000 out of the lot and it was already making the noise it seems like it would be noticeable fairly quickly.

exactly, thats another reason why i was stumped. he pulled the other s around, and probably let it idle for about 10 minutes, while he was making room for it, so maybe it had enough time to warm up a bit to start making the noise, or maybe some do this at different temps?

so far, nothing. when i saw that other s do the same thing, i was speechless, i should have asked them to pull another one around. when they heard it, they automatically thought it was just a characteristic, but i wasnt sure. what do you guys think i should do?
