Default WEIRD VIBRATIONS AT 50mph AND UP

Howdy again, good people.

Got a funny one this time.

I was driving the other day, and everything was normal, but then I hit 50mph and the car started vibrating like I was on rumblestrips. I mean, very noticeable vibrations that I felt clearly in my spine and etc.

The source was hard to locate. Couldn't tell from where in the car it was coming.

It didn't seem to matter what gear I was, or at what RPM I was at, or even whether I was in gear (at 55mph, shifted into neutral, it still vibrated, but probably slightly less dramatically).

So it seems to be entirely speed-dependent.

I had some recent mods done---at Stage I turbo kit, Competition clutch, and the rear diff from a 300Z---but when I called the shop to ask for advice they seemed to think it wasn't anything involving that stuff.

They suggested it might be a bushing or a ball joint or something on the suspension.

Anyone out there have other ideas? Or a similar experience?

Many thanks, guys!

Are you sure your car just doesn't need a wheel balance? Happen to me over 75 mph and a balance solved my problems.

Actually, that IS the first thing my mechanic suggested. But is funny that it just happened all of a sudden, right?

Two days ago it wasn't doing it, now it is.

But yeah, holy sh%$, I majorly hope that's it.

Thank you for reminding me.

PS does "nurburgring" mean that you've actually been around it in your car?????

No bushing or ball joint is going to cause a vibration.

I'll bet it's the driveshaft, since you have an alternate differential.

Definately sounds drivetrain related.

I would say there is a few probable cause

1. tire balance issue
2. Diff propeller shaft not mounted or balance
3. driveshaft possibly, but that using only happens on acceleration from my experience
4. bad wheel bearing causing free play in the wheels
5. bad outer tie rod

For No. 4&5 grab the wheels at the 6 & 12 o'clock position and try to rock it in and out to see if there is play

THANKS AGAIN, guys.

Took the car to the shop today---just a dealer; I'm out of town and didnt know where to go---and it DID turn out to be the diff. But just a "bearing" or some such---not prohibitively expensive, as I feared.

The great guys at INLINE PRO hooked me up with someone local and I'm getting great service from a shop I've never done business with before, so relief all around . ...
