I don't think it's the differential that is weak.

In Wesmaster's case it was the differential housing that failed not the differential. The teeth on the differential were stripped due to the differential breaking out of the housing.

Comptech offers reinforced differential housing on exchange basis.

Both are in fact weak!
I've not lost a bearing cap a la Wesmaster but have done in a couple diffs.

I have an extra KAAZ burning a hole in my garage if anyones is interested. I'll sell it for $550 if someone wants it.

Ozy, I believe the $470 is just for the hollow modified housing. You got to build it up with the guts out of your own "working" diff.

The $470 is just for the bearing caps, actually.

Beefing up just the differential gears is not enough if you want to run FI and launch at high RPMs. As of yet, no one has actually gone through with a complete differential strengthening, I'm half way there though.

As RT said, I've found the differential itself to be weak - I've gone through two. Although I should clarify a common misconception: the differential is a SEPARATE piece from the ring and pinion gears. The ring MOUNTS on the differential, but they are separate.

I had two stock torsens fail. The first was warranteed, so I can't speak to what it looked like on the inside, but the second I had to replace myself and found absolutely nothing broken - just a defective differential... no wear, no failure, just improper manufacturing I guess.

I use a Kaaz now and I am happy with it except that two things are always looming over my head: the fluid and the clutches. It all works great, but I've found a couple of hours of driving through the mountains makes the diff heat up to a point that it cooks the Kaaz gear oil (from all the turns). You have to use the Kaaz oil for the thing to work properly, and when it overheats, the fluid breaks down and doesn't work well anymore (and needs to be changed, not just cooled). This is not only a nuisance, but it's expensive, that sh!t costs $40 for a can (good for 2 fluid changes if you're careful).

As for the clutches, I haven't noticed any wear on mine yet in about 15k miles, but I know eventually they will wear out and I'll have to spend a few hundred bucks and a weekend of work changing them... Probably not for many more moons, but it's still in the back of my mind.

Other than that, I have been very pleasantly surprised with how well the car drives with this diff. I know RT is not such a fan of the mechanical diff, but I guess this is just a different strokes for different folks issue.

Man there was such a good opportunity for a play-on-words, but you missed it.
