Default Way to "check" tranny fluid?

Reviews have called my Saab 9-5 shifter "rubbery." Personally I find it pretty smooth. My 9-5 on the other hand feels pretty notchy and in need of some lube. Not sure how I check. I've seen the DIYs on how to "change" but I'm hoping I can check first.

Thanks,

D

Well, on our cars the fluid is supposed to be filled to the fill opening. So you can undo the fill bolt, stick your finger in there, and see if you can feel the fluid right below the hole.

Not sure on the fluid fill requirements for a Saab though.

most manual trans are the same way: fill up to fill bolt, let the rest drain out- make sure the car is level though

When in doubt replace the fluid, since the effort is essentially identical to do the test.
