Trich, where do you get this "dry gas"?

Gas line anti-freeze is mainly methyl hydrate. Get about 500 cc and dump it down the tank. That will be plenty to take care of whatever water got in there and at only 500cc, it won't hurt the engine. The Methanol will take up the water and allow the engine to burn it off.
Not letting the tank get below half was somthing that you used to do during winter because the gas was more likely to absorb moisture in those months. Now, most gas stations will add gas line antifreeze for their "winter" blends and it is no longer a big deal to run the tank down. If you are really worried about it, pour a bottle of gasline stuff in for every tank full you get during the winter months. It's not really necessary but if lightening your wallet by a couple of bucks will ease you mind, then why not?

Thanks Xviper. With the half a tank thing, I was just thinking that if he got any significant amount of water in there, and ran it down to a low level in the tank the chances of him swishing it around and sucking up a significant amount into the engine was greater.

Well, that's where the problem lies within. He was on a trip to Chicago when this happened, and has probably drivin another 100 miles after the incident.

Based on your description of the "incident", I doubt your friend has anything to worry about. If the gas cap was indeed sealed when he rinsed the area with water, he shouldn't have gotten water in the tank in the first place. Modern gas tanks seal quite well - ever notice the rush of air when you open your gas cap?

The suggestions above regarding the use of methanol (dry gas) are good ones if he needs additional peace of mind.
