Default Washer for final drive clearance adjustment necessary?

Having my 4.777 installed today and my mechanic said he had to buy a washer to adjust the clearance of the final drive. I had bought the OEM replacement parts from Rick and assumed this would have everything I needed. Anyone else need to buy this washer?

Not sure really. He said that because the 4.777 ring is bigger, they needed a different washer to make sure it fit properly.

The 4.77 ring is the same size as the 4.10. It is just has diff. teeth. I just want to make sure you didn't get ripped.

Was it the one washer that came with the gears. My mechanic said that that one was a different size than the original one but it was supposed to be. He had some chart in the s2000 manual that told him the right adjustmants with the new one.

The washers are spacers that are needed to adjust the fit of the ring and pinion gears and make them mesh perfectly, which is essential if the gear set is to last more than a few miles.

The gears are bench tested and fit before they are shipped and the proper spacing washers, based on this test, are shipped with the gears. The size of the spacers needed is even marked in paint on the side of the ring and pinion (an experienced installer knows this).

In every case so far (we've shipped over two dozen gear sets), the washers we ship are the correct washers. In some cases, different sized spacers may be necessary to get the perfect mesh of the gears. The size of the washer on the stock set has nothing to do with this and is irrelevant, since the fit of each gear set is different.

Since this is only the first time I've heard that other spacers were needed, I do have do wonder about the installer.

Rick, I didn't buy my gears from you. I got the J's racing ones. Only came with ring, pinion, and bolts.

In any case, the car runs great. Obscene power (relatively), breaks traction at vtec in second.
