VTEC HAS GOOD DAYS AND BAD DAYS?

cool..beans,billman. how often should it be cleaned? do i need a new gasket or anything if i where to remove the vtec valve? i have no problem now, but if i do later just want to be prepared.

In answer to your cleaning question, there is no set time interval to clean this thing. It's a matter of "when all else fails", take a look at it. If you use a good brand name oil and change it as per the recommendations in the owner's manual, this screen should not need your attention for the life of the car. However, if you neglect your oil changes or don't change the filter with a good one and at each oil change, this screen "could" get clogged. As you can see, it doesn't cost much, so if you are going to take it apart to look at it, you may as well throw a new one in.

gotcha, thanks for the info. like i say, as of yet i have had no issues. i run mobil 1 syn oil, changed w/honda filter every 3k miles(probably not necessary, but better safe than sorry)so, i hope i don't have to but now i know just in case.

If this screen gets clogged, you will eventually get a P1259 VTEC failure code stored. When this code is present, VTEC will not engage and you wil have a much lower rev limit. It's the PCM's way of dsaving the engine from being run in VTEC without enough oil pressure and volume.
