This K&N filter (RX - 4140) is about the same surface area as the one that comes with the Vortech kit, except it isn't conical and has a filter at the end for better linear flow. I didn't put a larger filter on it because of potential rubbing (and it really doesn't need it). You could attach a filter directly to the charger, but it would get *very* hot. The pipe adds some insulation and gets the filter out fom behind the radiator to some extent. After a few runs, the filter wasn't hot at all.

ps - Yes, a rain spray shield in the front would certainly be a good idea and is as much of the raison d'etre for the vortech airbox as protection from hot radiator air, but I don't drive in the rain, just wail around in the sun on RA-1s with no tread left.

Since the supercharger spins at an rpm determined by engine speed (unlike a turbo), hotter intake air might reduce boost at a given rpm, but only if flow is constant. If you change to a filter with better flow then it might cancel out the heat factor.

No. the boost before the aftercooler will not be decreased. The only way you will lose boost is if the after cooler can still drop the charged air to the same temp.
