Vortech SC says 92 octane or higher but......

There's a place in Campbell w/100+ octane at 4 bucks a gallon.
On my wife's chipped A4 I add Toulene to bump the octane up--makes a huge difference when it's hot out. Same stuff can be added to the SC S2000 to prevent detonation - esp. on hot days.

a) lying to you as the supply for CA CARB requirment premium unleaded 92 octane ran out a long, long, long time ago. Plus we've gone through at least one cycle of the seasonal blends that would obsolete the gas anyway or
b) doing something illegal.
Yes, you can still buy "racing gas" (you'll sometimes see it in Newport Beach, for example at $4.00+/gallon) with 100 + octane but that's a different story.

thats not the whole story. As it goes when you refine fuels you get multi grades. In california where there are a large number of premium sucking fuels they need to supply a geven number of gallons a day. To make 92 octane you mix a lower octane with a higher grade, as you whould imagine the gas does not just seperate in to large vats of 87 89 91. In cali they need every last drop over 91 to make enough good gas to keep everybody happy. Now the line is just and I mean just at 91 octane.
no on a seperate topic what we get as 91 is not 91 in other states. You can't even count on it being the same in california as there are several regions that each buy there own formulations, this is why we have modified smog testing protocols depending where you live. (Stupid CARB) Now luckly we loose some of the nasty smog related addatives like MTBE whicih in effect will allow the oil producers to give california a true 92 octane gas in early 2003. so go fill up around Jan first if you are in california. (This is due to the new laws taking effect on Jan 1st.)

I guess we in the east (or just me) take advantage of all the 93 and 94 around here. I fill up all the with 94 since it only costs me about a dollar more each tank. Gotta love Sunoco94!
