Default Video: Rear end Whining

UPDATE: I replaced the bad transmission bearings, but the noise is still present and coming from the rear. Please read and watch the videos in post #13:

Take a listen and let me know what you all think: http://youtu.be/bXCFAxmKDPI

Hi guys, my original thread is here: https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/111...haft-bearings/

Please help me ID this bearing so that I can make the order and get the part in ASAP. Doing a replacement secondary shaft due to whining that is seed related. I have removed and rotated the secondary shaft and surely enough the grinding is from the rear housing.

I think it is 91104-PCY-003 [BEARING, NEEDLE (30X64X20)] #18 Please confirm this for me so I can place the order.

The read arrow is the bad bearing/roller. It fell out and sits lower than the rest.

This photo is not mine, I am using it as an example to show the bearing I need to replace.

Here is a video in the case that anyone needs more info as to why I am replace this bearing too.
http://youtu.be/r_zjDOAmwK4

Please let me know if I have the correct part number listed.

Thanks.

I don't think that is what you need.

Look at the tapered roller bearing in the tailshaft itself.

Hi Billman,

I am glad you chimed in about this issue. I have seen and read many threads and saw your posts throughout those threads. The grinding noise is in the rear house as you stated. The parts that I am replacing are in the picture below: 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17.

Bearing #14 is completely fine, the noise itself is coming from where the flange is at. So I think it is bearing #12 that is bad. I rotated the secondary shaft when I removed the rear housing and the grinding noise comes from the end where the prop shaft connects to. However, I am still replacing all the bearings and recommended seals. Please watch this video and let me know where you think the noise is coming from:

Video of rear housing noise: http://youtu.be/Vq6O7vPt9Dg

However, after removing the rear housing, I saw that one of the bearings attached to the transmission bearing had a loose roller/ cylindricals bearing, which I assume is part number #18 (BEARING, NEEDLE (30X64X20)) in this picture:

The video of the bad bearing #18 attached to the transmission housing is here: http://youtu.be/r_zjDOAmwK4
Please watch the video and let me know if I should replace that bearing also. The cylindrical bearing actually fell out of its seat when I removed the rear cover.

I have the rear housing out and I have the bearings (10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17) for the rear housing, but not the bearing #18 (BEARING, NEEDLE (30X64X20)) in the diagram above. The race for this #18 (BEARING, NEEDLE (30X64X20)) is seated in the rear housing and I have to remove the shaft and replace this bearing race all at once. This because the secondary shaft gears is blocking the race. I can not remove the race unless the secondary shaft is out as the teeth on the gear is blocking the race. So if I am replacing this bearing too, then I need to order this new part and replace them all at once when the mechanic removes and presses the bearings on and off.

Picture of the gear on the rear housing blocking the race:

Please let me know if you have and questions and if the bearing above is bad, along with the part number I should order. I think it is 91104-PCY-003 [BEARING, NEEDLE (30X64X20)] #18 in this diagram:

Anyone with any info? I guess I will just order it as I need it. Also, it seems like the right part. I guess I'll go ahead with the order and cross my fingers I read the diagram right.

90202-PCY-000 012 001 NUT (29MM)
91104-PCY-003 018 001 BEARING, NEEDLE (30X64X20)

Since I will order a new locknut rather than reuse the old one.

The bad bearing, the middle bearing pressed onto the secondary shaft. Part #13 [91123-PCY-004 013 001 BEARING, TAPER (41X68X20)]

I replaced all 3 bearing and the 4th in the tranny housing.

Wow that's bad, what do you suppose would cause something like that? Abuse? Maybe a good reason to change transmission fluid a little more frequently than severe service calls for in the manual.

I don't know. I drive my s2000 like a daily regular car. No abuse or anything. BUT the problem started slowly and grew from there. First a small barely noticeable whine, which I thought was normal. I am definitely going to change the transmission fluid more from now on. You can read from more info in my other thread: https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/111...haft-bearings/

Yes. Just one bad bearing in the rear housing. The other bad bearing in connected to the end of the main shaft. You can see the video above for the loose roller bearing.

There is nothing wrong with the bearing in your video. Loose roller bearings do not matter in that type of bearing.

You should be servicing the oil pump and the magnet as well in this case.
