Valves going bad on AP1 vs AP2
Hello Guys,
I read this couple of times on the forum that some people suggest the AP1 is more prone to burnt or bent vales VS AP2. Is this true? If the valves are adjusted timely I dont see why AP1 will have this problem.
Thanks for any suggestions.

AP1: Uses old style retainers. These retainers are more "stretchy". With a bad mechanical overrev, they can stretch and be a time bomb - it might go off, and it probably will eventually.
AP2: USes newer retainer. Stronger. If they don't snap with the mechanical overrev, it probably wont drop later.
-info from the S2K guru, mr. billman.
You can upgrade AP1 retainers to AP2 retainers like I did...and not worry about it!

i hate my bad memory.
i don't remember if i replaced my retainers with ap1 or ap2.
perhaps i'll just replace them again in the near future for good measure.

Thanks guys, i will change my intake ratainers to ap2 ones.
I just like the AP1 models due to the higher revving nature and oversteer tendency of the car, its more fun for me! Just wanna make sure I got it covered mechanically!

How much trouble is it to swap these parts out? Is it much more work than just doing a valve adjustment?

rwheelz, if you have a competent honda tech help you its not bad.. I got a friend to help me out when I did mine. Youre goign to need some specialty tools though.
1) valve holder (compress the cylinder with air, holds valve up)
2) valve retainer remover.
the retainer remover looks like a hollowed out screwdriver. you position it over the retainers and tap it with a hammer, and the retainers pop out. installation is reverse of it. this is where it'll screw you up if you make a mistake.
other than that, you'll have to remove your camshafts/caps and thats the only difference from a valve adjuystment.
