Default Valve retainers / Springs What todo?

All,
This is my first post.

I have a S2000 - 2002 AP1. I was inspecting the valves and found one to be looking different than the others. See pics..

I have added a few here along with the valves of piston 3 to see the difference. The one that worries me is the one in Cylinder/Piston 2 - Valve.

All others look just fine just like the Cylinder/Piston 3 - Valves PICs.

I suspect I should change it sooner rather than later.

I have read a bunch of post and I am thinking of doing the following:
Change intake retainers to the AP2 retainers and change the exhaust retainers with new AP1 retainers.

My question is should I also change the springs? If yes to which AP1 or AP2?

This one worries me !!!!

Its a cracked retainer. Either you or the previous owner(s) executed an accidental over rev. Park that car NOW and get the intake retainers and cotters replaced STAT before driving any further…like yesterday. keep the stock intake springs, you just need the AP2 INTAKE retainers and related cotters. If its your daily driver, you'll be walking or taking the bus till you get it fixed. This is a serious issue that needs attention.

If that valve drops, you're in trouble. Unless you've got a heavy bank account.

Thank you for the info; It's exactly what I thought it would be. Thanks for the confirmation.
I have a Audi SQ5 parked so I am good with taking my time getting this fixed.

Since I will be replacing the intake ones and everything will be accessible; should I go ahead and replace the exhaust ones as well? If yes which ones should I use the AP1 or AP2 retainers for the exhaust?

leave the exhaust ones alone unless they look the same with that sunken appearance of intake #3. There are lots of threads on this issue found on s2ki. check them out and be educated.

good luck!

You have quite a few broken intake retainers.

As bad as that one intake looks, there is a small, remote chance that the exhaust retainers may have a tiny undetectable crack. I have only seen it one time. They will not appear anything like the intake side.

Check the intake camshaft for etching, above that one real bad retainer.

Sandpaper the rough edges off the spring, ap2 retainers and cotters intake side, ap1 parts exhaust side.

Billman250,
Thanks for the info buddy..
I will go ahead and change the intake retainers and cotters with AP2 and on the Exhaust side I will go ahead and change the retainers and cotters with AP1; as you suggested.

I see a little bit of etching but I touch it and it feel not bad still smooth? What can I do on that?

When you say Sandpaper the rough edges of the spring? Do you mean the one with the bad intake valve or all ?

What is the reason why you shouldn't use F22C retainers and keepers on the exhaust side to match the intake side?

The reason is due to fears of the the extra weight of the AP2 retainers that you will instead of cracking your retainers end up with valve float and bend a valve or worse. The fear is unfounded in my opinion, if you over rev you've already done damage to the car. By all means AP2 retainer it up intake and exhaust, you don't have to worry a lick about valve float from the slightly heavier retainer. The AP1 retainers are lighter but more fragile, AP2 retainers are heavier but more durable, neither will affect the way the car drives within the rev limit. My retainers were fine at 158k miles when I did my valve stem seals, I bought the AP2 ones in case I had a cracked one, but I lost an intake retainer, so I just ended up replacing them all with AP2 on the intake, otherwise the AP1's would have stayed on.
