I have done exactly this, one of the heads of the bolt has broken off, I will try your tip tomorrow thanks for posting (I realise it was a few years ago).

I've had a few spark plug cover bolts work their way loose. Suppose improper torquing was the cause. Now I have yet to find any of my valve cover bolts come loose.. Then again I've reached pro status in removing/installing valve covers lol

Hah, well although I am not quite at 'pro' status I have done it a few times nonetheless!

Still, I need one of these http://www.ukclassicparts.com/mini-spare-parts-and-accessories/mechanical/12H2557.asp but obviously for the S ... not sure where to source one UK wise however.

Anyone know the part number? Exact same thing happened but I lost the washer and bolt. I ran the car a couple of months and just noticed the bolt and washer are gone and oil all around it. Also lost the bolt for the TDC sensor... I'm using a replacement for both but would prefer OEM.
