Of course you did. It's called valve CLEARANCE. it is what you are measuring, and yes you will feel it in ANY rocker that is not loaded by the cam.

the rocker arm should have no play between the roller side and the camshaft. the feeler gauge goes between the top of the valvestem and adjustment screw where you had it in the video and that should be the only clearances going on.
Delete youre post. It's completely inaccurate. his vid is showing normal factory clearance of about .010.

Thanks Billman250!! I was unsure because I can still get a feeler gauge in there with the rocker down (and have it stay down). I've never done this before and I want to do it right, so I thought I'd ask.

Gonna get wrenching again asap

I said noticeably for a reason. 0.010" is One hundredth of an inch...like the thickness of paper. The rocker should move only a tiny amount

Maybe the video isn't showing the actual clearance, but the rocker 'appeared' to move more than .010". When he lifted the rocker arm up, that IS the clearance and a larger feeler gauge than spec shouldn't fit. Is that more clear?

That feeler gauge looked like it slid around loose also when he put it in there. The op did not slip a larger gauge in there so I don't know, but it appeared to me as the looser end of the tolerable spectrum

It slid loose because it was a .008.

All s2ks from the factory will have .009 to .011 on the intake sise.

The noticeable movement in the video is normal.

Exactly. .008 and .002, but yes

Re-read billman's posts, he is the man when it comes to these cars. He has given me top advise and I agree with what he has said having adjusted my valves recently...you want loose when the valve is to be adjusted, it is called play and you adjust that play with the guage to make sure it is accurate.

I'd like to add, if you have trouble getting a feeler gauge, it might help to pull the rocker upwards to make sure it is against the cam. If the rocket isn't pressed up against the cam, it's possible for a novice to just think that the gauge doesn't fit and his clearance is good.

Example:
Rocker is not pressed against. It's sitting 0.003" low.
Try a 0.011" doesn't fit. Didn't realize that the rocker wasn't pressed against the cam.
Try a 0.010", and it fits, so you think you're good but you really have 0.013" clearance.

Chances are that when putting the 0.010" in, you'll bump the rocker up and then you won't have drag and you should realize something is wrong, and recheck the 0.011".

This picture, even though it is mid-stroke it's not in the correct position for doing valve clearances, may help:

The crank is turned so that the two lobes point upwards. This means that the smallest radius of the cam is near the rocker. The rocker is then pushed up against the cam, to maximize the space between the rocker and the valve. That space is the valve clearance.

The cam lobe end of the rocker should be down, against the cam, that will give you the maximum gap to play with and adjust.

This makes no sense. The rocker needs to be UP against the cam.

Yep, sorry, I got it upside down. But like I said the rocker needs to be against the cam.

Sorry to deviate the thread a little, but I just did the ap2 retainer + valve adjustment over the weekend.

Everything went well, My car that was sputtering, rough idle, bogging, is now all gone, car exhaust sounds throatier too, idles like a champ!

I'm not sure if it's my ears, but the valve ticking seems louder now. Should I recheck my clearances? I did .009 for the intake, and .010 for the exhaust.

Car runs much beautifully than before, more fun to drive, but i do feel a bit of an uneven powerband under 6000. It feels I have fixed something big, but its doesnt feel quite "perfect" yet.

I also noticed that the tip of my #3 spark plug was melted???? (thus the gap has changed) while i was taking the valvecover off. I ordered new plugs today, but they wont be in for a while.

Could the sparkplugs have an effect on CEL and slight hesitancy? or recheck the valve adjustment first?

thanks!
