Default Valve adjustment and misfires/low compression

Hello,

I recently purchased a 2001 S2000 and have been wanting one since their release. I chose to have a valve adjustment completed at a well known Honda tuning specialist for piece of mind after owning the car for a month or two. Approximately 2 weeks after the valve adjustment my CEL came on and I took the car back to the shop that performed the valve adjustment. CEL was for misfires on 2 and 4 plus random misfires. They installed 4 new coil packs, 4 spark plugs, and completed a compression test showing low numbers on 4th cylinder. I was told the low compression was likely due to cylinder wall wear. Three weeks later the CEL returned again due to misfires. This time I took the car to a different tuning shop. They recommended a valve adjustment and leak down test. I was hesitant to have the valves adjusted as I just paid to have them done, but I agreed. Shop 2 contacted me today and told me all the valves, especially the 3rd were very tight and have been corrected. I will be hearing about the leak down test tomorrow. I have purposely not shared the names especially of the first shop intentionally (they are both very well known). Any thoughts and opinions on my venting post are appreciated.

Sounds like shop number one did not know what they where doing and taking a crap shoot at it. I would definitely be looking for a refund. Sounds as if you did not need coil packs either. second shop sounds like they got it right. I had a leak down on cyl 2 and had bad results ended up just being valve stem seals. Swapped the head not long ago for personal reasons not mechanical and my bottom end was fine. 145k miles. So good luck with shop one and the refund. I would defiantly bring up the better business bureau

Thanks for your advice. I was thinking the same regarding shop 1. I won't be making any decisions until I get the results from the leak down test.

Not good

1 and 3 are 0%
2 is 17%
4 is 40%

The shop was unable to get the misfires to stop at idle on the 4th cylinder. The 4th is losing the most at the short block. A replacement engine was reccomeded in the future once the current engine can't pass emissions.

Very frustrating especially since the car was purchased from a Honda dealership 3 months ago.

Why did they say bottom end was bad? What did they say or do to determine that?

They just said it was leaking mostly from the bottom end of the engine...I forget the technical terminology used.
