honda valve trains are always noisy. its just the way they are. you can adjust it and quiet it a little but there will always be some ticking there. it won't cause any harm.

See, that's part of my problem I've never heard another S2000, so I don't really have much to compare against.
Hopefully I'll be able to get together with some locals and take a listen...

The lighter ticking is most likely the timing chain, the deeper ticking that is almost like tapping is usually the valve train. Find another person who has the same year and close miles without a valve adjustment and listen to theirs, depending on their driving style it should sound similar. Tightening the valves will reduce the noise, but be careful not to have them overtight as that will cause more damage than if they were on the loose side.

Get a mechanic's stethoscope or a length of 3/8" hose and put your ear with it up to the valve cover - you should then be able to tell easily the origin of the tick.

As a practical joke when I put a rearend on my friend's truck, I tightened a zip-tie to the shaft just past the yoke, and left the excess - didn't cut it off.
It took a few days before he finally noticed it, while pulling away from a traffic light. He said he heard a ticking, but only at low speeds, so asked me what the deal was. I just told him it's probably nothing...
He finally checked it out underneath and found my little present. The ticking was from the loose end of the zip tie slapping against the underbody.
